Canon ink cartridges: Convenient and modern ink storage.

Canon ink cartridges are small plastic vessels designed to fit inside a computer, fax machine, or other printing device, and dispense ink onto paper for printing and copying with high tech methods like laser and ink jet printing. They are basically a way to store ink so that it is ready to use when the time comes, and that may seem like a simple accomplishment, but actually it is a highly complex design task and mechanism. An ink well is an early ancestor of a cartridge like those made by the folks who manufacture Canon printer ink. In the middle of the 19th century, around the time that fountain pens were invented and the  fountain pen industry took off, inks were made from ammonia based aniline dyes. They are the true forebearers of modern ink. These inks could be made in an different colors, and didn’t clog up or corrode inside to pens or on paper. They were not as strong as modern inks, and would fade if exposed to sunlight for a long time. They could also be reconstituted into liquid if they got wet, so if you wrote a letter and it got humid, it might smear, unlike modern inks that tend to hold up better under various conditions.
