Concerned About the Side Effects of Bisphosphonate Drugs

My mom has been prescribed an osteoporosis medication by her doctor and I started doing some research on the drug.  I read that the side effects of bisphosphonate drugs are considerable.  Some of these medications can cause abnormalities in the GI tract that can include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramping, flatulence, obistipation and ulceration of the esophagus.  In addition to the GI tract abnormalities, users can also develop eye problems, skin rashes and pain in the joints, bones and muscles.  There are more serious side effects as well; the most serious being the development of a disease known as osteonecrosis of the jaw.  I think my mother should give some thought to looking for an alternative treatment for osteoporosis.
