We are converting over from electric. My father has been telling me for years to do it, but we figured if it wasn’t broke, don’t fix it. But the electric boiler finally bit the dust and now we’re looking for natural gas boilers to compare prices on.  Dad says in the long run it will save us money and that it’s better for the environment. I’ll just have to take his word on things like this because to be perfectly honest, I don’t have much of an opinion one way or the other. We’ll be doing our big shopping trip for this tomorrow.

There’s a lot of newness about autumn. There’s my  new braun kf187 coffee maker.  There’s the new school term, with children changing classes or starting school for the first time with new books, new uniform, new pens and new pencils. Even now I love new stationery; there’s something nostalgic and exciting about the smells of blank exercise books waiting to be written in, felt tip pens, new rubbers and pencil lead. Then there’s a whole new wardrobe to worn, with new colours and new fashions for the season. Even if you’re dusting off last year’s coat, scarf and gloves they feel new, having waited patiently through the spring and summer until this time when they’re pulled on once again. And new boots; I have to have new boots. All the better for kicking up the autumn leaves and splashing through puddles.

When we visited my aunt Louise in Rhode Island, I was very impressed by their house. It has a simple but nice living room with a big sofa in front of the TV.  Their dining room is also spacious. They have two floors with five rooms on the second floor. What really caught my attention are their vertical blinds, which looked really good at their window. I think my aunt hired an interior designer for their home. To confirm my thoughts, I asked her straight up. I am being a good younger sister tonight and babysitting for my older sister and her husband.  They desperately wanted a night out and I love to spend time with my new niece Olivia.  Sis and her husband found a set of Ruby Tuesday Coupons to splurge with.  I hope this means they will spring for dessert too.  I love coming over here and playing adult.  I like to pretend like this is my home and Olivia is my baby.  It’s the best way to do it because by the time I am tired of it and she’s cranky or asleep, I get to go home.

It was a hard time. The weather has been killing us for two days now. Our first floor was flooded all the way. This morning, a new hope has emerged. As soon as I woke up, I also woke up my brothers and sisters. We opened the shutters all at the same time to see the sun shine outside. It was a great feeling. The storm has already passed. The light from the sun enters the room. We were glad that this is all over. We’re lucky to have made it through. We’ve survived yet another disastrous typhoon here in the Philippines. window blinds

I remember in third grade, we had pen pals in one of the junior high schools in town. Each week we were required to write to our pen pals and we would anxiously wait on our return letters. There came a day where our teacher informed us that our pen pals were coming to meet us in class later that month. My pen pal seemed so cool and I could not wait to meet her! I remember that everyone else was buying gifts for their pen pals, but I made her some gifts instead. I made two paper photo frames, a pencil case, and a bracelet which I proudly presented her with. We drifted apart after that school year was finished, but 18 years later, I overheard a woman telling her daughter that her pen pal once made her homemade gifts instead of buying something. It made me wonder if that was my pen pal.

I’m off and running this morning. There is so much to do. I couldn’t sleep last night just thinking about it. Maybe I had too much sugar and caffeine too. I went to a potluck party that featured recipes people had submitted to a cookbook. Some of the food was pretty good, but the peanut brittle ad the hot fudge took the cake. The fudge sauce didn’t look like it would be good. It was kind of gritty. However, over ice cream it was awesome. Some got spilled when I tripped over a cat, but cleanup was easy.
